The FocusPRO Series is a cornerstone of the Honeywell Home lineup, providing high-reliability climate control for millions of households. Tasked with modernizing this legacy hardware, I designed the digital experience for a full range of models, from simple, non-connected units to advanced, fully connected systems with complex feature sets. My work focused on transforming a fixed-segment LCD into a high-clarity user interface that bridges the gap between traditional hardware and modern app connectivity. By optimizing visual hierarchy and navigation within extreme hardware constraints, I created an intuitive system that empowers homeowners to manage their HVAC effortlessly while streamlining the setup process for professional installers.

Unlike a high-resolution touchscreen where you can design with freedom, a fixed-segmented LCD requires you to pre-define every possible icon, digit, word, and indicator in the hardware. The challenge of fixed-segment design is creating a cohesive digital experience across a tiered product line while adhering to hard-coded limitations, both in terms of the segment shapes and the total amount of segments allowed on a single device.

A fixed-segment LCD functions like a pre-cut stencil rather than a blank canvas. Unlike a smartphone screen made of millions of flexible pixels, these displays use shapes physically etched into the glass, similar to the digits on a microwave or a digital watch. To create a screen, the software lights up specific pre-defined segments in different combinations to communicate information. The image above displays how different segments can be lit up to show various information based on interface needs.
With a limited set of segments, I designed repeating visual patterns that users can quickly learn to accomplish their tasks. I created a consistent logic where the process for changing a mode is identical to adjusting the fan or navigating the menu. This consistency helps users build muscle memory and adapt to the experience almost instantly.
To modernize the device's aesthetic, I designed custom fonts for both letters and numbers. By carefully shaping these segments, I was able to move away from the dated look of traditional appliances and give the interface a more contemporary, premium feel.
To guide users through complex tasks like setting up a schedule or navigating deep system menus, I utilized blinking segments as a primary communication tool. These pulsing states act as a visual guide, signaling exactly which element is active and what requires the user's attention. This approach transformed static hardware into a responsive, step by step digital journey.

I designed a navigation flow that feels modern and responsive despite the static constraints of the display. Since many advanced tasks require navigating multiple settings, I created a logical layering system that operates in a linear, horizontal fashion. Selecting a menu item takes the user one level deeper into a new horizontal sub-menu. To prevent users from feeling trapped or lost, I ensured they can navigate up, down, left, and right throughout the architecture.
A critical feature of this system is the Save and Exit function. At any point in the menu, users can return to the main screen with a single button press. This safety net reduces the cognitive burden and encourages users to explore the device without the fear of getting stuck.
I worked closely with the app engineering team to ensure the on-device language matched the patterns found in the Resideo Pro and First Alert apps. My goal was to create a unified experience where the physical hardware feels like a natural extension of the digital ecosystem rather than a separate or confusing product. By aligning the iconography and interaction logic between the two platforms, I ensured the transition between the physical device and the mobile screen feels seamless and intuitive.

Following its launch at the Connect 2024 event, the updated FocusPRO series solidified its position as a high-reliability staple by bridging the gap between legacy hardware and modern app connectivity. The intuitive digital interface significantly streamlined on-site configuration for professional contractors, allowing for faster installs and retrofits through the Resideo Pro app. By making advanced energy management accessible through a fixed-segment interface, the series earned ENERGY STAR® certification and became a core driver in helping homeowners lower heating and cooling costs across millions of installations.
